Susana Sanroman presents her piece ‘East of Eden’ as part of the #51% RememberHer Exhibition on International Women’s day

written by Brit Es Magazine March 8, 2017

Susana Sanroman is a female artist seeking to create a dialogue between the viewer and the artwork through the inclusion of women’s perspective. We can appreciate this at ‘East of Eden’, a video-art piece produced by her in India that will be present as part of the #51% RememberHer Exhibition, which will be open in Plaistow (East London) on International Women’s day.

‘East of Eden’ reflects on the role of women in society, while shows the intricate connections between Mother Nature and womanhood. A series of ritualistic elements are unfolded during the performance, commenting on the cycles of life and dead. Dead is shown as the ultimate transformation, leading to new beginnings.

Launching on International Womenʼs Day, March 8th, #51%RememberHer references London’s 51 per cent female population and is the inaugural exhibition of over 100 women artists featuring sculpture, painting, animation, installation, photography, drawing, performance, graffiti, spoken word, history walks, talks and special events throughout the month.

#51% RememberHer provides a significant survey of the creative female talent who live, work, study or have a family connection to the creative melting pot of East London.

Artists will animate the East Tower of the Byzantine style, Grade II listed church, spilling over into the South Hall and Upper Balcony.

Curator Rebecca Feiner said “Women are half of our history, half of our present, and half of, all our futures. Culturally with Maria Balshaw taking over at London’s Tate Modern, and politically women physically making their presence felt from Japan, to Poland, from Saudi Arabia to America and here in the UK, it really felt like the right time to celebrate female creativity and make this exhibition happen.”

Susana Sanromán is a Galician photographer who has made London her home. Since completing her studies in photography at the London College of Communication, she has been involved in a number of exhibitions both as an artist and a curator. Her work displays intimacy and delicately-woven subtleties, and she is considered part of a group of artists known as the Generation of 2008. In 2009 she published the photographic essay ‘Women looking at women: the female gaze’.

She has stretched the limits of conventional photography through her work assisting internationally renowned artist Tom Hunter. Sanromán is a pioneer of new disciplines that transcend visual art and has worked with a number of innovative collectives in the London scene including Artcrunch, Centrepoint Collective and Shunt Lounge. She is also part of the New Opera Hero project. She has been assisting internationally renowned artist Tom Hunter from 2008 to 2013. One year later, 2009, her photographic essay ‘ Women looking at women: the female gaze’ will be
