#IberoBritEs: In Madrid, Paula Rodríguez and Sandra Arpa perform ‘Rosaura’, a play inspired by Calderón de la Barca’s La Vida Es Sueño

La Incubadora del Corral (‘The Corral Incubator’), an experimental theatre programme running for its third consecutive year at Corral de las Comedias in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid.

On 23rd, 29th and 30th May, five projects will feature in La Incubadora del Corral (‘The Corral Incubator’), an experimental theatre programme running for its third consecutive year at Corral de las Comedias in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid.  The Corral founded this initiative to give audiences a fresh, 21st-century take on the Spanish classics.

One of the projects selected for this year’s programme is ‘Rosaura’, by actresses Paula Rodríguez and Sandra Arpa.  In the play, they reinterpret the central female character of Calderón de la Barca’s ‘La Vida es Sueño.’  They told Brit-Es that they have explored her personality from new angles, from a poetic perspective highly relevant to the current political climate in Spain, using her as a metaphor for the need for change.

For their theatrical investigation, they use a storytelling technique as old as language itself, where they both serve as narrators, characters and interpreters of the mystery lying at the heart of this masterpiece of the Spanish Golden Age.

SYNOPSIS

This is the story of Rosaura as it has never been told before; a story of disillusionment, betrayal and awakening.  A story that begins in a cold, desolate cavern, where Rosaura discovers a creature buried alive, a man-beast howling for freedom.  Friendship, tears, silence, anger and affection mark their journey as they set out in the hope of a new dawn.

The other projects selected for the Incubadora experimental theatre programme are: ‘La muerte del apetito’ (‘The Death of Appetite’), by LAFINEA Teatro, ‘Burladas’ (‘Deceptions’), by Burning Theatre, ‘La fregona del sevillano’ (‘The Sevillian’s Scullery-Maid’), by Katum Teatro and ‘La guerra según Santa Teresa’ (‘The War According to Saint Teresa’), by María Folguera.

Brit Es will be there following Paula Rodríguez, a London-based Spanish actress whose work we adore.  We recently saw her play Micaela in the Spanish Theatre Company’s production of Jardiel Poncela’s  ‘Eloísa is under the almond tree’  in London.
