When art grows to become experience: 12 Miradas :: Riverside Open Call

12Miradas::Riverside is a cultural action program which puts contemporary creation in centre stage as its tool of choice for achieving its goals. This initiative is being promoted by Coorporación Hijos de Rivera and the Laboratorio Creativo Vilaseco, and developed by artistic director Carlos Quintáns.

The world has changed. It is shifting and transforming, and so art spaces are too. Some traditional art galleries are starting to think up with ways of growing and expanding within today’s art scene.

The Galería Vilaseco is an example of this. This marvellous, iconic gallery in A Coruña, Galicia reinvented itself for the 21st century to bring about talks to broaden the way that contemporary creation is brought together in the artistic market.

Their line Laboratorio Creativo Vilaseco (Vilaseco Creative Laboratory)  is the best example of this new type of space for hybrid art, where there’s room for talks, workshops, residencies and multidisciplinary events. A formula more akin to what you might find in New York galleries, where art from different disciplines, experiences and knowledge come together in the same place, and where the exchange of ideas is one of the driving forces behind the creative action.

Inspired by this philosophy of expansion, the 12 Miradas::Riverside open call will lead to a residency for any creative who considers themselves an artist.

The project’s promoters want to bring about a meeting of minds for 12 creatives working in different disciplines to share 12 ways of looking at the creative process.

Previous editions have seen the workshops led by prize-winning photographers such as Joan Fontcuberta, great landscapists like Teresa Gali-Izard, sound artists like CaboSanRoque, and designers like Cruz+ Cruz, among many others.

This year, schedule for October 2019, the 12Miradas::Riverside covers all travel and boarding for six creatives from Spain for the five days of the course with international artists Antonio Murado, who has lived and worked in the US for more than 20 years. There are also going to be grants available for six US creatives to join the program.

Additionally, for the first time, this “residency-workshop” is being held in the wonderful Mana Contemporary New Jersey.. An enormous creative space, building over an old tobacco factory dating back to 1920.  The building’s labyrinthine structure allows for the exchange of ideas between artists and thinkers from the world of art. Creators from different disciplines (painting, sculpture, photography, dance, cinema, sound, performance, etc) work together in an environment which encourages and promotes experimentation, collaboration and mutual inspiration.

In short, this open call is an opportunity for the12 chosen multidisciplinary creatives to share something genuine – working together alongside the artist Antonio Murado. A chance to pursue a meeting of ideas, disciplines and creative synergies, not to mention an opportunity to be able to push contemporary creation towards other cultural and artistic frontiers.

12miradas::Riverside is guided by three fundamental principles:

Communicate. Transmit to any audience profile, experiences of a creative nature that serve as inspiration and facilitate creative development.

Connect. To encourage different sectors, agents and territories to collaborate in a bid to create new workflows.

Innovate. To always favour creativity as an indispensable factor when looking for new models and solutions.
