Location: Gasworks, 155 Vauxhall Street, London

Gasworks’ Participation Programme aims to widen access to contemporary art for local communities through interactive projects such as workshops, residencies, commissions and events.

The Residency

Gasworks is seeking to appoint an artist whose practice is concerned with the advancement of participation within a contemporary art environment. The candidate must be committed to engaging with the local migrant community around the Lambeth and Southwark area, and will deliver a diverse range of regular participatory educational activities in a creative and enjoyable way throughout the 8 months of the residency.

The artist will be expected to programme a series of 10 events, workshops, or other interactive activities aimed at migrant community groups in Lambeth and Southwark. The programme should incorporate the artist’s own practice as a means of developing a cohesive project with an overall output at the end of the residency. Outputs could be in the form of a publication, film, exhibition or performance. The artist will provide an innovative and inspiring educational context for local residents/groups to come together and engage with contemporary art. This could involve partnerships with other organizations in the local area and might be inspired by Gasworks’ other programmes while responding to the aspirations and needs of the leading artist and local participants.

The residency should reflect Gasworks’ history of creative engagement and practice – based learning in the local area. We have built a strong network of partners (schools and other community spaces) which have supported our engagement with a variety of local groups. This network can be accessed by the artist to establish Gasworks as a focal point for creative activities in the neighbourhood.

Gasworks will provide the artist with a desk, computer and office facilities in a shared office, as well as a selection of general art – workshop materials. Gasworks will also offer a fully equipped participation room (shared with other programmes) for residency activities. The programme budget must cover the costs of all activities and the final output, as well as fees for any external support. The artist will be expected to work cl osely with the Participation Evaluator and assist with gathering and collection of audience data, including surveys at the end of workshop sessions, being present for interviews with community partners.
